Coughing, shortness of breath, and chest and/or abdominal pain are some of the most common mesothelioma symptoms. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face. In severe cases of the disease, the following signs and symptoms may be present: blood clots in the veins, which may cause thrombophlebitis, disseminated intravascular coagulation (a disorder causing severe bleeding in many body organs), jaundice, or yellowing of the eyes and skin, low blood sugar, pleural effusion, pulmonary emboli, or blood clots in the arteries of the lungs, and severe ascites (a buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity). Symptoms of each form of mesothelioma are listed below.
Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms
The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are caused by a build up of fluid between the lung lining and the chest cavity. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest are some of the symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. Additionally, those with pleural mesothelioma may experience fatigue, anemia, wheezing, hoarseness, and coughing up blood.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma Symptoms
Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites, and may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, cachexia, and fever.
Pericardial Mesothelioma Symptoms
Some common pericardial mesothelioma symptoms include chest pain, ranging from uncomfortable to severe, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, persistent coughing, and extreme fatigue. |
